After Ramadan, we begin preparations for Kurban at the Omeriye Foundation.
We begin by consulting with our foreign partners and individual donors from different countries around the world.
Well-wishers from these countries send in their donations to our partners for us to carry out the Qurban sacrifice on their behalf.
In Kenya, more than 4.4 million people face food insecurity.26% of children under the age of 5 suffer from malnutrition.
These are the people we aim to assist during Qurban. Every year, we review the different locations we have visited in the past and make a new list, trying to reach more needy people all around the country.
Some villagers have told us that they go for months without eating meat, and their diets are lacking in protein, which is essential for a balanced diet.
Over the years, we have developed strong partnerships with various slaughter houses all around Kenya.
Before Qurban, we get in touch with each of them, and ask that they begin looking for sacrificial animals.
These slaughter houses source animals directly from pastoralist communities in Kenya. It is a source of income for this communities.
The sacrificial animals are chosen from a range of options including sheep, lamb, goat, cow, or camel.
To be eligible for slaughter, the animal must be in good health and meet the required age criteria.
We make sure that the animals we choose:
After the suitable animals have been identified, we tag them for identification and make sure they are well fed and kept in a hygenic environment.
Once the cows have been slaughtered, the meat is cut into small portions, which are easier to handle, and cook eventually. 5kg bags make up a single portion
After packaging, we move on to distribution. The meat is distributed in two ways: As a package, or as a carcass, depending on the number of people the donation is meant for.
In 2023, we distributed meat in Mombasa, Malindi, Nairobi, Kilifi and Isiolo. We also handed out packages in 100 different villages around the country. In total, 26,014 packages and 578 institutions received Qurban donations.
The meat we distribute gives needy families in Kenya sustenance and joy during Kurban season. Your donations enable us to carry out our humanitarian activities during Qurban.
Below are our annual Kurbaan updates
Every year, we perform Kurbani sacrifices for thousands of individuals, and distribute the meat to needy families around Kenya
