Data from the World Bank shows that there have been improvements in Kenya's education sector since the introduction of free primary school education. 2018 statistics showed an 82% literacy rate for individuals above age 15. This was an increase from 72% in 2007, and 78.7% in 2014. However, despite the improvements in school enrollment and literacy, Kenya still has a hard time ensuring that primary school students proceed to join high school and later join university.
Many students are forced to drop out of school in order to work and support their families. A 27% primary school dropout rate was reported in 2017 by the Kenya Climate Innovation Center. 10.1 million kids in Kenya attended primary school in 2019. However, in the same year, only 3.26 million kids began secondary education. In 2019, just 509,000 Kenyans attended college.
Despite the fact that the Kenyan government spent 5.3% of GDP on education in 2018, and allocated a further 544.4 Billion to education in the 2022-2023 budget, there are still too few teachers and resources in the classrooms. Teachers in many areas are overworked and exhausted because the teacher-to-student ratio surpasses 1:100. The government is making great efforts to raise the proportion of students who move on to secondary school, but more funding and support is needed to facilitate the hiring of more teachers and to provide students with high-quality education.
Towards this end, The Omeriye foundation, together with support from our partners, sponsors Kenyan students and enables them to stay in school by paying their secondary school and university fees. We also carry out school renovation projects in impoverished areas of the country and donate school shoes, bunk beds, desks uniforms, and sanitary essentials to needy students. With support from donors like you, we can make a bigger impact and help more needy students in Kenya
